Pure Molybdenum Foil
Pure molybdenum foil is thin and easy to cut and is often used to process parts for molten glass, heat shields in furnaces and filament holders in high-intensity light bulbs. Also called a refractory metal, it has a higher melting point than most metals. Molybdenum has approximately nine times the thermal conductivity of Kovar, so heat can move quickly through and away from the material. It also has a low coefficient of thermal expansion, about half that of most steels, which means it won't deform as temperatures rise. However, molybdenum is denser than Kovar and steel. Known for its better thermal and electrical conductivity than tantalum and platinum, it is commonly used as a semiconductor in motors and power supplies and as a component in solar cells.
This material is resistant to oxidation at temperatures below 750° F but will oxidize rapidly when exposed to air above 1400° F, making it ideal for high temperature vacuum environments. It is also resistant to corrosion by acids and molten materials such as metals, alloys and glass compounds. However, when it begins to oxidize, it will be corroded by alkali.
