Preparation of niobium
Metal niobium can be produced by electrolysis of molten potassium heptafluoroniobate, by reduction of potassium heptafluoroniobate by metallic sodium or by reduction of niobium pentoxide by metallic aluminum. Pure niobium is used to remove residual gases in electron tubes. Doping niobium in steel can improve the oxidation resistance of steel at high temperatures and improve the welding performance of steel. Niobium is also used in the manufacture of high-temperature cermets.

vacuum carbon reduction method
The vacuum carbon reduction method is currently one of the main methods for producing metallic niobium at home and abroad. Carbon reduction is generally performed in a vacuum carbon tube furnace. This method utilizes the fact that the affinity of carbon for oxygen is greater than the affinity of niobium for oxygen, and uses carbon as a reducing agent to reduce Nb2O5 to produce niobium strips. Its advantages are high product yield (>96%), cheap reducing agent, low production cost, no by-products of sodium reduction and other methods that require wet treatment, and higher purity niobium bars and metal powders can be obtained.
There are two processes in industry: direct carbon reduction and indirect carbon reduction. The niobium produced by direct carbon reduction is sponge-like, has a large surface area, and has low metal impurities and nitrogen content, which is beneficial to the specific capacity of niobium powder. Therefore, this process is suitable for the production of capacitor-grade niobium powder. The characteristics of indirect reduction are large equipment production capacity, stable process, relatively dense metal niobium strips and regular appearance and dimensions, which is suitable for making niobium strips, niobium ingots and niobium processed materials.
