Metal niobium can be produced by electrolysis of molten potassium heptafluoroniobate, by reduction of potassium heptafluoroniobate by metallic sodium or by reduction of niobium pentoxide by metallic aluminum. Pure niobium is used to remove residual gases in electron tubes. Doping niobium in steel can improve the oxidation resistance of steel at high temperatures and improve the welding performance of steel. Niobium is also used in the manufacture of high-temperature cermets.
