Pure tungsten electrode is the earliest electrode used in argon arc welding, but under DC welding conditions, this type of electrode is prone to non arcing or unstable maintenance. This scenario can be significantly improved by adding rare earth oxides.Therefore, pure tungsten electrode is only used as a welding electrode under AC conditions or as a resistance welding electrode.
Pure tungsten electrodes have a minimum tungsten content of 99.5% and no alloying elements. Pure tungsten has a very high electron escape work, so compared to other alloy tungsten electrodes, pure tungsten electrodes are more difficult to arc and maintain the stability of the arc beam. In addition, due to its high electron escape work, the electrode tip temperature is high and grain growth is prone to occur, which will lead to unstable arc beams, more difficult arc initiation, and shorter service life. Pure tungsten is only used for AC welding, however, good DC options are also available.

The green undoped tungsten electrode was created specifically for light metal welding with sinusoidal alternating current. For welding with direct current, it is not appropriate.
