Nitinol spring is a shape memory spring. Shape memory alloys (SMA) are one of the most promising smart materials today, and they can provide novel solutions for multiple fields and various applications (e.g. actuators, biomedical applications, clamping systems, etc.). Shape memory Nitinol has the unique ability to recover its original shape through a reversible thermoelastic phase transformation after deformation. This ability enables shape-memory nitinol to recover from large strains either spontaneously (pseudoelasticity) or through an increase in temperature (shape memory effect). Among commercially available shape memory alloys, nickel-titanium (Ni-Ti and Ni-Ti-based) alloys stand out due to their excellent performance, reliability and strain recovery properties. Nitinol is attractive in various medical applications due to its biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, and fatigue properties.

What is special about Nitinol?
In addition to its shape memory function, Nitinol wire has excellent thermal conductivity, high corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility. These properties make Nitinol especially useful in medical devices, with the assurance of not causing adverse effects on the human body.
Is Nitinol more expensive than stainless steel?
Since nitinol is much more expensive than stainless steel, and difficult to process, shape and join, it is only used when other options fail. This is the case, for example, in stone retrieval devices in the urological tract.
Is nitinol stronger than titanium?
In the sawbone test, the titanium nail yielded a higher ultimate force against the applied load than did the stainless steel and Nitinol nails before the gap completely closed; the difference in linear stiffness between the nails was nonsignificant.
Is nitinol magnetic?
Although Nitinol itself is generally assumed to be paramagnetic, there have recently been unpublished reports of strong magnetic responses in Nitinol specimens following heat treatment at high temperatures.
