Is Nitinol more expensive than stainless steel?

Since nitinol is much more expensive than stainless steel, and difficult to process, shape and join, it is only used when other options fail. This is the case, for example, in stone retrieval devices in the urological tract.

 

Why is nitinol so expensive?

Although invented in 1959 it took many years for Nitinol to be commercially available. Part of the reason for this is the high level of control needed to create the alloy. Vacuum Arc Remelting is utilized to combine Titanium and Nickel, a process with high operating costs.

 

Why are Nitinol engines not used?

A nitinol wire engine is at best about 5 percent efficient at turning thermal energy into mechanical energy. It can run off a low thermal difference, but the actual useful energy output is almost nothing. And they don't scale up well.

 

Does nitinol react to electricity?

Nitinols (Nickel-titanium alloys) have a good electrical conductivity and biocompatibility with human tissue and bacteria and, therefore, can be effectively used as an anode material in bioelectrochemical systems.
