A washer is a thin, flat material with a hole in the center that is used with bolts and nuts to distribute the load of threaded fasteners.
Tungsten washers are known for their extremely high density; due to this unique property, they are often used to balance rotating parts. The high quality of tungsten also makes these gaskets radiopaque. This allows the tungsten gasket to block radiation and show up well on X-rays - even better than lead.
Tungsten washers are typically made from a tungsten alloy that meets ASTM B777 standards, containing 90 to 97 percent pure tungsten and alloyed with nickel and copper or nickel and iron. Fasteners can also be made from commercially pure (CP) tungsten.
